Election Commission launches ‘cVigil’ App to help voters share malpractice proof

cVIGIL will allow anyone in the election-bound state to report violations of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) that comes into effect from the date of announcement of elections and goes on till a day after the polls.

States cannot appoint acting Director General of Police: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on July 3, 2018, passed a slew of directions on police reforms in the country, stating guidelines for appointment of the Director General of Police (DGP).
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, comprising A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, ordered all the States and Union territories to not appoint any police officer as acting Director General of Police (DGP). The court also directed all the states to send names of senior police officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for being considered as probable candidates to be appointed as DGPs.

Project Sashakt: Sunil Mehta Committee’s 5-pronged strategy to tackle NPAs approved

Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal on July 2, 2018 approved the Sunil Mehta Committee’s suggestions of a 5-pronged strategy to tackle the Non-Performing Assets (NPA).

The committee led by Punjab National Bank Chairman Sunil Mehta has submitted its draft report titled ‘Sashakt’ to the Finance Ministry with a strategy to tackle stress in the banking sector. However, there is no proposal or recommendation to create a bad bank. The ‘Sashakt’ Report highlights nine guiding principles aimed at the operational turnaround of the banking sector in a manner that will create jobs and enhance the value of public sector banks.

Social Justice Ministry organizes National Workshop on Skill Development for Persons with Disabilities

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment organized a ‘National Workshop on Skill Development for Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan)’ in New Delhi on July 3, 2018.

The workshop was organized with a view to providing a platform to all stakeholders ranging from training partners to the policymakers as well as employers. It was inaugurated by Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot, while Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, was the Guest of Honour.

Income Tax Department launches ‘Instant’ PAN Card Service

The Income Tax Department on July 1, 2018, launched the ‘Instant’ Aadhaar-based PAN allotment service for individuals seeking to obtain the unique identifier for the first time. The facility is free of cost.

A fresh PAN will be allotted on the basis of a one-time password sent on the mobile number linked to the Aadhaar number of a person. The new PAN will have the same name, date of birth, gender, mobile number and address as in the Aadhaar. The facility was introduced after the IT Department witnessed the surge in the number of applications filed by people for the Permanent Account Number (PAN).

Madhya Pradesh to implement Ayushman Bharat Yojana

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana under the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Swasthya Suraksha Mission will be implemented in Madhya Pradesh from August 15 this year. Under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, an annual health security cover worth Rs 5 lakh will be provided to each family.
